The policy of using the Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools in writing manuscripts for the Iraqi Journal of Laser (IJL)

IJL's AI Policy seeks to offer clearer transparency and advice for authors, reviewers, and editors using generative AI and assisted AI tools

Authorship:

  • Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Claude, Jasper AI, Midjourney, Runway, etc., can generate various content, including text, images, and data. These tools cannot accept the varied responsibilities required of authors and thus cannot be listed as authors on papers.

Text, Figures, and Images Integrity:

  • The use of AI tools to generate text is not permitted, but they can be used to improve and edit original text to help authors explain content in a non-native language. However, authors must review the results of such AI support.

  • Any use of AI tools to generate figures, images, or code must be acknowledged and documented in the manuscript upon submission through a statement that includes the name and version of the AI tool and a description of how the tool was used and the reason for use.

  • Also, generative AI tools cannot be used to produce, change, or manipulate the original data or results, such as plots or measurements. Any generative AI tools employed to generate figures, graphs, or charts from data must be disclosed in the figure caption.

  • Authors must review and appropriately acknowledge content generated by these tools, as AI tools may generate output that can be biased, incorrect, or incomplete. Editors may decline to proceed with manuscripts if AI is used inappropriately.

Reviewers and Editors:

To avoid risking proprietary rights and data, reviewers and editors are not allowed to upload the contents of submitted manuscripts, response letters, or decision letters to AI tools, even if the aim is to enhance language and readability.
